Trail Run Magazine - Spring 2011

They tested our Running Kit (Ultra Lite) in the latest Australian / NZ Spring edition

Spider’s eyes. That’s how you tell a good beam from a half-arsed one. Forget lumens, just count the number of eyes that stare back at you like lost diamonds in the dust when you’re running on a trail through the dark with your headtorch .... once you’ve got a set of these bad boys, there’s no longer any excuse to fit a run in, no matter what time of day it is. Dark is the night no more. read on here trail-run-spring-2011.pdf (2.2 MB)

UK customers - Did you know we are Singletrack recommended and we scored an MBR 10 rating in their reviews in 2008 & 2009. Unfortunately we didn't get an invite into Singletrack and What MTB for 2009

European heavy weight Mag, Mountain Bike Plus reviews the Ay Up V4 Adventure in this month's issue. We will be posting this online within the next 4 weeks. Gerko, the reviewer made the following comments ... Another amazing thing is our review of the Ay-up light set… We have tested some lights in the past but this one is by far (and I mean BY FAR!) the best I have ever tested. The versatility and the practical use, the endurance of the batteries, the package, I have been testing and trying to find any design flaws or failures but it is just a SUPERB product!

UK user - Having just migrated from a Hope 4 (900 lumen) to these (400 lumen per light set) The Ay-ups are just gob smackingly small and light. Both the lights and lithium polymer batteries are so small and lightweight that there is really no problem leaving them permanently strapped to your helmet, you really hardly know they are there. Honest, the size and weight will astonish you. And personally I like the no-fills approach because it makes these things pretty well bombproof and there is less to go wrong.

Ay Up's versus Exposure
My first nightide out and it was immediately obvious that the Exposure Joystick was simply not up to the job in comparison to the AyUps. The Joystick is a good light, but was simply invisible next to the light from the AyUps. The long and the short of it is the Joystick is going on eBay, and I've ugraded to the MTB set - whcih works brilliantly. Massively recommended, I'm absolutely stoked by the power, duration, accessories and customer service of these lights.

Ay Up's versus Lumicycle
I moved to Ay-Up's from Lumicycle and i will not be changing any time soon

Warranty report - read on ... I had need to replace a battery under warranty and the guys at Ay-Up couldn't have been more helpful, the replacement battery arrived less than a week later and I didn't even have to wait until they had received the old one back. Yeah, I know this reads like an advert, but take it from me that after just over 12 months I still absolutely love these things and cannot think of a bad word to say about them.

I wouldn't change them for any other lights and for what you get in the pack they're worth every penny.

UK review by Gary, Mountain Bike Instructor - Aug 2010

The bike kit is staggeringly good. Used for the first time last night over two hours on technical, wooded, single-track that I’d never ridden before, and (as far as is possible to gauge) I don’t think I’d have been going any faster in daylight.

The lights give complete confidence, instantly. There simply isn’t any “getting used to” them, you just ride without thinking. I was taking rough ground, gullies, drops and jumps on-sight, at pace, without any degree of hesitancy. The units never needed adjustment, as are seemingly impervious to trail wobble, and the gecko system on the helmet was comfortable, and un-intrusive. This is genuinely “fit and forget” stuff.

I’m hugely impressed by the quality of the light output. Having used a variety of headtorch/lamp combinations in the past, I’m overwhelmed with the consistency, clarity and colour response of the beam. There are no dim spots (or bright patches), and the depth perception even with just one light-unit is excellent. A lot of the sandy trails I run and ride can appear to go “flat” under certain weather/light conditions, so I was really impressed with the level of detail they pick out.

With regard to the intensity of light, I rode almost exclusively with the lights on their lower setting, as I’m most interested in their performance as an endurance product. I can see why you don’t advertise this as “half power”, as the step down is marginal, considering the extended burn time this level offers. I can see the full power level being really useful in bleak weather, really technical trails, or just when the brain starts tiring, but also for navigation across more open ground that I was riding last night. The narrow beam on the helmet is certainly useful for picking out features either stationary, or on the fly, and this is what I’ve always looked for in an “adventure” set up.

We have many riders around the globe using our lights. We will slowly gather a wide spread of comments from our customers for you to read before you buy.

Here's some words from MBR UK. 'It’s all very well looking at lumen counts on paper, beam patterns in theory and battery life on quoted tables, but it is out on the trail that everything is brought together'
After the test they found the following 'Ultimately though, the Ay-Ups were favourite with all the testers. In the comprehensive Adventure V4 kit, you get both helmet and bar lights with more than enough power and battery life to satisfy any riding need' Oct 09
